Beauty and Enormous Spider, 1853

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a beauty conjuring up an enormous spider, startling the young man who kneels beside her. She grins at him as she clasps her hands together in a magical gesture, her long her flowing over her shoulders. The sleeves of her outer robe have been pushed down to the waist, revealing a kimono patterned with a spider web. Behind her, the giant spider stares at the samurai with large glowing eyes, fangs and claws ready to pounce. A delicate web spreads across the dark background. The man looks ahead with a fearful frown, his brows furrowed. A great supernatural design, wonderfully detailed.
