Up-to-date Teruuji in an Old Picture at an Old Temple, 1849 - 1851

Comments - Fantastic scene from a kabuki play based on the "Tale of Genji," showing a young couple at an old abandoned temple. The beauty Tasogare kneels on the verandah, clutching a robe in her hand. She leans forward eagerly as her lover Teruuji offers her a towel. Behind the tattered sliding screens at right, the crazed woman Shinonome eavesdrops on the pair, a hannya mask dangling from a cord between her teeth, her brows furrowed. The horned hannya mask depicts a woman whose jealously has transformed her into a demon. An intriguing subject with the eerie ruined building and a glowing full providing a great atmospheric setting.
