Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Portraits of Four Beauties

Comments - Charming uncut page featuring four small portraits of beauties from popular kabuki plays. At upper right, the loyal nursemaid Masaoka has been charged with protecting the young heir to the Date Clan, keeping him safe in the women's quarters. The young prince stands at her side, gesturing with a fan to the pet bird cage that her son, Tsuruchiyo, is holding. At lower right, the beautiful Hatsuhana has dragged a cart bearing her crippled husband Oguri Hangan to the Shirataki waterfall to pray for his recovery. A great design with attractive color and fine detail, including touches of burnishing. An unusual uncut kabuki print, each image framed by a decorative red floral border.
