Attack outside a Monk's Retreat, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting scene of a battle taking place outside a monk's retreat in the countryside. At left, a warrior chances after his enemy, striking him on the shoulder with his sword, while a wounded samurai in a straw raincoat falls face down into a flooded rice field. The fight continues behind them with samurai clashing with swords and spears. A dappled horse seems to be mired in the rice paddy at upper left. In the center, a bearded warrior bursts into the hermitage with an angry grimace, startling the monks inside. At right, two men pound rice in a large container while pots cook on a large hearth behind them. A fascinating subject, nicely detailed.
