Comments - Charming triptych illustrating a scene from the beloved Japanese novel "The Tale of Genji," looking down into a palace with the landscape beyond. In the center panel, Genji stand at the open gate, enjoying the maple tree coved with autumn foliage and the green fields in the valley below. At lower right, beauties carry in offering trays of refreshments, including an exotic pineapple and a large mochi cake. At far left, women are seated on the floor between hanging cloth panels used as screens. Softly shaded clouds drift across the sky, and the silhouette of two deer can be seen atop the brown mountain at right. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting, with fine bokashi shading in the mountains and sky.
