Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Mariko: Local Specialty Dumplings, 1854 - Attractive design from this interesting collaborative Tokaido series by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III. In the foreground a waitress carries a black lacquer tray filled with tiny blue and white porcelain cups. She smiles happily, an apron tied over her green striped kimono, the sleeves held out of the way by a red sash. The beautiful winter landscape by Hiroshige shows the village of Mariko nestled at the foot of a snow-covered mountain, with fine bokashi shading in the wintry gray sky and ground. A lovely design.
