Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Togashi, 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the nobleman Togashi in the popular kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho). Charged with watching the Ataka Border for Yoshitsune and his men trying to slip in unnoticed, he becomes suspicious of a group of yamabuki or mountain priests, whose young portrait looks like (and actually is) Yoshitsune. Here he looks over his shoulder soberly, with a slight frown and furrowed brows. He wears a dark blue kamishimo patterned with birds in flight over a kimono featuring bands of gray floral and orange geometric print cloth. His tall black court cap is tied under his chin with a twisted blue cord. An attractive design, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black court cap, an embossed line along the side of the nose, and embossing on the edge of the white crest on the drapery overhead.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. One small hole, repaired, blends well. Very slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
