Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Shichinin no Otoko," from a new performance at the Chitose-za Theater. It depicts seven chivalrous commoners, otokodate or "street knights" who protected local people from outlaw samurai. They are shown gathered in a temple courtyard, a large stone torii gate behind them. Each is armed with a single sword, and several have shakuhachi flutes peeking above their backs. They wear matching purple kimono and checked obis, with just slight color variations in the geometric design in the body of the garment. All the roles have surnames with "mountain" (yama) in them: Danjuro plays Sanno-yama, and Kikugoro plays Ueno-yama. The actors are Ichikawa Gonjuro, Nakamura Shikan, Ichiikawa Sadanji, Ichikawa Danjuro, Ichikawa Kodanji, Onoe Kikugoro, and Nakamura Fukusuke. A great setting with fine detailing in the shops lining the courtyard and the temple entrance beyond. An attractive triptych with vibrant color.
