Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Outside a Ryokan, 1865

Comments - Charming triptych depicting three beauties standing outside the entrance to a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. The woman at left smiles as she approaches, lifting the hem of her robe as she walks along on tall wooden geta sandals. Her kimono is shaded from light brown to pink, with a design of willow branches and stylized bats in flight. The beauty in the center looks back at her companion, her robe bordered with swimming fish. The entrance opens into a courtyard with a pulley over a well at left, the entry flanked by large wooden tubs of water. A pine and a blossoming cherry tree frame the scene overhead. A lovely and interesting design.
