Iwai Kumesaburo III as Hikiroku's Daughter Hamaji, 1852 - Handsome kabuki portrait of the actor Iwai Kumesaburo III as Hamaji, the daughter of Hikiroku in a play based on the novel "The Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi." She smiles happily as she looks over her shoulder, adjusting a hairpin with an iris on it. She wears several layers of kimono tied with a black obi, her hair pulled back into a large bun adorned with an elegant lacquer comb, floral hairpins, and ribbons. A cuckoo flies through the night sky, a lucky omen. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in their collection. An attractive design from this interesting series with fine line work in the hairstyle and burnishing in the obi and black kimono collar.
