Courtesan and Angry Guest, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a courtesan and an angry guest in an interior. At right, Inada Kozo shakes a pipe above his head, grimacing unhappily as he tucks the hem of his yellow plaid kimono up at the waist. At left, a courtesan kneels beside a folding screen around a bed, smiling as she looks over her shoulder, waving her hand at her companion. She wears a blue outer kimono patterned with oversize chrysanthemums over a red tie-dyed under robe edge with a blue print. A lamp rests on the floor at left, and floral fans decorate the wall behind. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III and Nakamura Shikan IV. Nice expressive figures
