Under a Plum Tree, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of actors under a blossoming plum tree at New Year's. The fellow at left carries a branch over his shoulder decorated with lucky symbols for the holiday, including a turnip and a target with an arrow through it. He smiles as he looks back at his companion, who frowns unhappily, carrying a bouquet wrapped in paper. The beauty at right looks up with a grin as she lifts the hem of her robe. Each panel features a circular inset with a portrait, including a princess wearing an elegant headdress topped with a golden phoenix. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XII, Bando Shuka I, and Seki Sanjuro III. An attractive design, nicely detailed.
