Beauty and Commoner at the Water's Edge, 1856

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a couple at the edge of a river, the beauty smiling at her companion as she ties her yellow obi. He frowns back at her, resting on one knee and holding the ends of a towel draped around his neck. A circular inset above shows a distraught-looking man grimacing as he looks to the side, with a woman peeping over his shoulder. The shore is lined with shrubs covered with bright yellow blossoms, and the opposite bank is seen in soft gray silhouette against the blue evening sky. Lovely color and detail, with a subtle embossed geometric pattern in the black robes. An interesting subject.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 19 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few wormholes, repaired, blends well. A few creases, slight soiling near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
