Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864 Japanese Woodblock Print
47 Ronin, Act 7

Comments - Handsome scene from Act 7 of the classic kabuki play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." Yuranosuke has just discovered the courtesan Okaru spying on him at the Ichiriki Teahouse while he reads a secret message about the vendetta. He gestures angrily at the beauty, ready to kill her to keep the plan secret. In the center, her brother Heiemon struggles with another samurai, grabbing his arm and lifting him over his back. Heiemon asks Okaru to allow him to kill her himself, to save their family's honor, and she agrees. Hearing this, Yuranosuke is convinced of their loyalty and stops them. The actors include Onoe Baiko as Okaru and Ichikawa Kuzo as Teraoka Heiemon. An attractive design with nice color and detail in the fabrics and setting.
