Prince Genji in Exile at Suma by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Prince Genji in Exile at Suma

Comments - Fantastic triptych from a collaboration done by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III depicting an updated Prince Genji in fashionable modern dress rather than the clothing of the Heian era when the novel was written. The young prince stands on a verandah overlooking the sea, watching the ship that has dropped him off sail into the distance. The black trim of his coat features beautiful patterned burnishing, and the white trim of the kimono is faintly embossed. A koto rests on the floor beside him, indicating that he has not left all comforts behind, but the landscape seems desolate, with only a few fishing nets strung up to dry on the beach below.

Of the few originals that survive today, most are in museums. This piece normally sells in excess of $5,000. Take advantage of this opportunity to own an original at a small fraction of that cost, bid or buy now!
