Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Nagoya Sanza, 1861

Comments - Handsome portrait Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the disgraced samurai Nagoya Sanza. Banished by his clan after a valuable scroll in his care was stolen, Sanza has vowed to retrieve the precious heirloom. Here, he stands outside a doorway at night, pushing up the sleeve of his black kimono, looking up with a slight frown. His hair is pulled back into a bushy upright topknot, tightly tied with cord. A pine tree frames the night sky above a bamboo garden fence. Nicely detailed with a burnished geometric pattern in the black kimono.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. A few small holes, repaired. Toning and wrinkling. Faint toning, slight creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
