Surprised Sumo Wrestler, 1859

Comments - Interesting scene of a matron peering around the edge of a folding screen at the sumo wrestler Nuregami Chogoro, who scratches his head in surprise as he looks up from his bed. The woman smiles at him, while the courtesan Azuma cowers on the floor in front of her, grinning but hiding her head beneath her kimono sleeve. Kawarazaki Gonjuro I plays Chogoro. A handsome design, nicely colored and detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 19 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few small wormholes, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
