Struggle at the Aburaya Pleasure House, 1852

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Ise Ondo," a complex tale of a bloodthirsty cursed sword. Here, a struggle takes place at the Aburaya Pleasure House as Mitsugi becomes possessed by the unsheathed blade, determined to kill the beauty Okon at left as he waves the weapon over his head. The courtesan backs away on the floor, throwing out her hand in a stopping motion as the merchant Kitaroku grabs Mitsugi from behind to try to stop him. On the shoji panels behind them, the silhouettes of beauties performing the Ise Ondo dance can be seen, gracefully waving their arms and striking poses. The actors include Iwai Kumesaburo III as Okon, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Mitsugi, and Ichikawa Komazo VII as Kitaroku. A great illustration from this classic drama, with a beautifully detailed setting and fine bokashi shading.
