Series; Combined Pictures and Calligraphy of Actor-Poets
Nakamura Utaemon IV, circa 1848 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Nakamura Utaemon IV as a samurai staring to the side with a tight-lipped grimace. He wears a red kimono patterned with Buddhist prayer wheels, the sleeves tied back with a twisted purple and yellow cord. His bushy hair and sideburns, along with his red stage makeup, give him a fierce appearance. An interesting design from this rarely seen series, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
