Series; Twenty-four Examples of the Meiji Restoration
Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the Pirate Kezori, 1877 - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the pirate Kezori, frowning as he looks up, a compass in his upraised hand. He wears an exotic shirt patterned with a dragon and trimmed with a ruffled collar, a green brocade kimono lined with purple draped over his shoulders. He has a thick beard, and his shaggy hair sticks up above his head. An inset at upper right features a modern steamship, a symbol of the rapid modernization taking place during the Meiji era. An interesting design from a rarely seen series, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair.
