Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Startled Commoner, 1893

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a startled commoner scrambling backwards, his hand flung out before him in a defensive gesture. At right, smoke billows from a brazier in the floor, drifting out across the winter landscape as snow falls steadily against the gray sky. The actor is Onoe Kikugoro V. A nice large expressive figure with a handsomely detailed setting.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two panels, attached at the seam, backed with heavy paper. A few holes, repaired with backing. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
