Lori no Ume by Tsukioka Kogyo (1869 - 1927)

Original Tsukioka Kogyo (1869 - 1927) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lori no Ume

Series; Fifty Kyogen Plays, 1927

Fifty Kyogen Plays - Handsome design from a rarely seen series by Tsukioka Kogyo depicting fifty kyogen plays. Kyogen is a traditional form of Japanese comic theater, often performed during the intermissions of Noh plays and designed primarily to make audiences laugh. Actors use exaggerated actions and dialogue, along with slapstick and satire in their roles. These lively images capture the colorful characters from kyogen plays and the amusing antics of actors onstage. Some designs include shimmering mica or embossing. We've never offered woodblocks from this rare Kogyo series before. A great choice for a collector interested in traditional forms of Japanese theater.
