Sukeroku and Agemaki, 1876

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene depicting the otokodate or street knight Sukeroku visiting his sweetheart, the courtesan Agemaki. He stands in the center, frowning as he pushes up the sleeve of his black kimono. A shakuhachi flute can be seen above his back, and a towel is draped over his shoulder. Agemaki looks back at him with a surprised expression, her eyes wide. She wears a beautiful purple kimono with a rooster on the back, her hair adorned with large combs and many decorative hairpins. At right a samurai watches the couple solemnly, dressed in a dark blue coat and matching kimono patterned with thistles and wooden grave markers. A blossoming cherry tree frames the deep red sky overhead. From left, the actors are Iwai Hanshiro VIII as Agemaki, Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Sukeroku, and Kataoka Gado III as Torii Shin'emon. Nice expressive figures and rich, vibrant color.
