Returning Sails in the Ryukyu Islands: Minamoto no Tametomo

Series; Military Brilliance for the Eight Views, 1852

Returning Sails in the Ryukyu Islands: Minamoto no Tametomo - Terrific design of the twelfth century warrior Minamoto no Tametomo onboard a ship, frantically gesturing with a fan behind his head. He looks over his shoulder with an alarmed expression as he watches his loyal retainer, Kiheiji, who was accidentally left behind, swimming to catch up with the ship. He wears a deep green kimono patterned with the paulownia symbol of the Minamoto Clan, tucked into floral print hakama pants, his hair pulled back into a ponytail. An incredible composition with the famous samurai framed by the curvilinear edge of a sail, stretched taut with ropes crossing the image diagonally. Beautiful detail and rich deep color in this handsome portrait. A great Kuniyoshi samurai subject, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Stitching holes along right edge from previous folio binding, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling, faint pink offsetting at lower left edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
