Couple on a Moonlit Night, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a young couple along the shore of a river on a moonlit night. The beauty Kokin kneels at left, smiling as she looks up, an umbrella in hand. In the center, Hikozo looks back out her out of the corners of his eyes, frowning unhappily. He carries a folded red robe over his shoulder, a sword in his free hand. At right, the villain Daiba no Nizo emerges from behind a clump of foliage, a large knife clenched between his teeth, watching the pair closely. Misty clouds drift before the full moon, and a pine tree frames the gray night sky. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV as Izutsuya Kokin, Bando Hikosaburo V as Kurokiya Hikozo, Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Daiba no Nizo. A handsome design with an attractive natural setting.
