From the Uchida Publisher Archives - We were fortunate to purchase a wonderful collection of 20th century prints directly from the archives of the Uchida Art Company of
Kumagai and Taira Atsumori on Suma Beach - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Ichi-no-Tani Futaba Gunki." The Minamoto samurai Kumagai Naozane. Kumagai is about to kill the valiant young Heike warrior Atsumori at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. Atsumori kneels on the shore of Suma Beach, his hands clasped before him in a final prayer, his battle helmet and sword nearby. Kumagai glares at him with his sword ready, reluctant to kill his young opponent, but honor bound to do so. A moving image from this popular play, beautifully colored and detailed with soft shading in the water and sky.
