Nagoya Sanza in the Yoshiwara, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of the disgraced samurai Nagoya Sanza strolling through the Yoshiwara at night. After the evil Fuwa Banzaemon stole a valuable scroll in Sanza's care, he was banished by his clan. Here, he lifts his hat for a better look as he unexpectedly encounters Banzaemon while out walking. His kimono is shaded from plum to gray and patterned with swallows flying in a rainstorm. Teahouses line the street at right, with red paper lanterns hanging from the eaves, and a flowering cherry tree frames the night sky. A nice design with an attractively detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. A few horizontal folds. Slight creasing, slight toning in margins. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
