Robber and Pilgrim, 1879

Comments - Fantastic illustration from a kabuki play about a young robber named Ishikawa Goemon, who attempts to kill Mashiba Hisayoshi, who was responsible for the death of his father and adoptive father. Here, Goemon strikes a pose on the verandah of Nazenji Temple, frowning unhappily after realizing that the pilgrim standing below is indeed his enemy Hisayoshi. He has just thrown a knife at him, which has struck the water dipper held up by Hisayoshi. His intended victim glares up at him, wearing a white pilgrim's vest with a string of prayer slips around his neck. A terrific, dramatic composition with Goemon's large figure dominating the scene against the vibrant red of the temple doors. His black robe is burnished with a large floral pattern, and Hisayoshi's vest is delicately embossed. From left, the actors are Suketakaya Takasuke Iv as Mashiba Hisayoshi and Onoe Tamizo III as Ishikawa Goemon. A memorable image from this popular tale.
