Series; Intermediate Stations of the Tokaido, 1852 - 1853

Yamamura, between Shirasuka and Futagawa: Ichikawa Saruzo I as Yoshitsune, 1852 - Wonderful depiction of Ichikawa Saruzo I as the great Minamoto warrior Yoshitsune. He wears a blue coat over a finely patterned kimono featuring the paulownia crest of the Minamoto Clan. He carries a fan and a straw hat for traveling, his long hair neatly combed back away from his face. He looks over his shoulder with an expression of worry, his brows slightly furrowed and lips curled into a frown. The landscape above shows a view of the sea framed by tall pine trees, a few tiny sails visible on the distant horizon. Terrific fine line work in the carefully detailed hair and soft shading in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small wormholes, small thinning spot at right edge, repaired, blends well. Very slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
