New Year Dancer, 1864

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring a sambaso dancer at New Year's. He strikes a pose with his sleeve behind his head, shaking bells with his other hand. He looks over his shoulder at the fellow at left, who points at him and waves his fan. A nobleman looks on from the right, smiling slightly. He wears a beautiful blue kimono patterned with cranes and bamboo, and a black court cap. The figures are framed by a decorative border, with blossoming plum branches above. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Egami no Fukusuke, Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Sambaso, and Ichimura Takematsu III as Senzai. An unusual design with fine bokashi shading and handsome wood grain impression in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small loss at one top corner, a few small wormholes, repaired, blends well. Soiling, faint spotting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
