Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Jiraiya, 1898

Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the young thief and magician Jiraiya. A popular folk hero, Jiraiya grips his sword in one hand while holding a wooden chest under his other arm, looking over his shoulder with a defiant frown. His hair is pulled back into a long pony tail, with shorter hair forming a shaggy halo above his head. He wears a red brocade kimono over a suit of armor, the sleeves of his green outer robe pushed down to the waist. A great design with the large expressive figure set off by a plain background, with text and a few misty clouds at left. Beautifully colored and detailed with fine line work in the hair and burnishing in the black trim on the chest.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
