Comments - Striking kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the priest or monk Uchiyama Munetoshi.. He stares up over his shoulder with a grim frown, his recently shaved head shadowed in pale blue. He wears a deep red outer robe that has oxidized to a darker tone over a white kimono and light blue under robe, tied with a purple sash around the waist. The text on either side echoes the shape of the figure, which is set off by a warm cream colored paper. A handsome and unusual composition, nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono.
