Ohatsu Attacking Iwafuji in the Garden, 1862

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the story of the senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji, who plots against her junior, Onoe, by substituting a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. After the sandal was discovered, Iwafuji publicly beat and humiliated Onoe, who then committed suicide. Here, Onoe's loyal maid, Ohatsu, encounters Iwafuji in the garden determined to avenge the death of her mistress. Resting on one knee, she thrusts a sword at Iwafuji, watching her from the corners of her eyes. Iwafuji grimaces back at her, gripping the handle of her umbrella. She wears a black kimono over a blue and white under robe, her long hair streaming over her back. Cherry blossoms frame the night sky and shrubs are covered with yellow flowers. Bando Hikozaburo appears as Tsubone Iwafuji. A handsome design with soft shading in the sky.
