Captain Sakuma Raising a War Cry at the Occupation of the Pescadores, 1895

Comments - Handsome illustration from the Sino-Japanese War of Captain Sakuma sounding a bugle as the Japanese attack the Chinese in the Pescadores. Leaning back on one leg, he raises his instrument high as he calls the troops into battle, orange shots streaking across the sky behind him. An officer leads the way with his sword in hand, a fallen enemy slumped across the rocky hillside below. At lower right, Japanese troops move forward carrying rifles with bayonets fixed. A dramatic image from this historic conflict, with fine bokashi shading and faint embossing in the clouds. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Toshihide (1863 - 1925)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Light toning, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
