Spring Scene at Naka-no-cho in the New Yoshiwara, circa 1839 - 1842 - Terrific view of the bustling New Yoshiwara district during springtime. Elegant courtesans and small attendants stroll along the busy street, some accompanied by servants holding umbrellas over them. Guests look down from the second story verandahs of the teahouses lining the courtyard. A fenced garden in the center of the boulevard encloses cherry trees covered with pink blossoms. A beautiful subject with attractive color and fine bokashi shading in the sky. A rarely seen Hiroshige design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
