Banshu Takasago: Origin of the Twinned Pines of Onoe, circa 1843 - 1846 - Incredible Hiroshige triptych illustrating the origin of the famous Takasago twinned pines in Harima, a black pine and a red pine naturally joined together. They are one of several sets of "aioi-no-matsu" or "pines growing together" that were famous during the Edo era and symbolic of a man and a woman growing old together in marital fidelity. Here, legendary statesman Takenouchi no Sukune looks up to admire the ancient trees growing along the shore, shielding his eyes with his hand. At right, the Empress Jingu wears an elegant headdress trimmed with beads, an attendant sheltering her with an umbrella patterned with a phoenix. At left, two other noblemen kneel beside the trunk, each holding a bow. A few sails are visible in the distance on the calm water, and a rosy glow spreads along the horizon as the sun sets. A beautiful depiction of this famous site, wonderfully detailed and colored with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. The British Museum has this image in its collection, and we've never seen another elsewhere. A rare Hiroshige design and a fantastic choice for a collector.
