Immortal Appearing, 1890

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a sennin or immortal appearing to a young man and two women. He rises out of a swirling gray cloud at left, red rays of light radiating from his head. He is dressed as a hermit, with shaggy hair and a mantle of leaves around his shoulder, a rustic walking stick in his hand. The young man looks up from the scroll he is reading with a slight smile, while the young woman at right turns back to look at the matron beside her. The beauty wears a white kimono tied with a purple sash, her hair pulled back into a ponytail tied with a red ribbon, with longer locks hanging over her shoulders. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V, Nakamura Fukusuke IV in a duel role as both the young man and the beauty, and Ichikawa Sadanji I. A fascinating subject, nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono.
