Series; Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital

Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these images in its collection. These attractive designs are beautifully colored and detailed, making them a great choice for a collector interested in Edo era woodblocks.

The Uota Restaurant, 1853 - Fantastic profile view of Ichikawa Ebizo V as the elderly warrior Tarozaemon in the kabuki play "Daito-no-miya Asahi-no-yoroi." He grimaces angrily as stares ahead, his face contorted with rage. He wears a gray kimono patterned with plaid squares and large stylized blossoms, the sleeves tied back with green cord. His white hair is pulled back into a thick, bushy topknot, the sideburns detailed with delicate embossing. The image above shows boats on the Sumida River at Nihonbashi-koamicho, while the inset at left features a tray of delicacies at the Uota Restaurant. A great expressive figure, nicely detailed with an embossed texture in the pale yellow kimono trim.
