Series; Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital

Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these images in its collection. These attractive designs are beautifully colored and detailed, making them a great choice for a collector interested in Edo era woodblocks.

The Tamaya Restaurant, 1852 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Onoe Kikugoro III as Tamaya Shinbe in the play "Tomigaoka Koi-no-yamabiraki." He looks ahead with an alarmed expression, eyes wide as he frowns, one arm crossed over his chest, his fist clenched. he wears a striped kimono over a very finely embossed red under robe, his hair pulled back into a thin topknot. The landscape by Hiroshige at upper right shows the back gate of the Tamaya Restaurant with a blossoming plum tree below, while the fan-shaped inset features festival decorations for a New Year's celebration. A fine, expressive figure.ad with a ponytail is just visible under his arm at right. The insets by Hiroshige above show lanterns and lamp bases at the Hyakuseikiro Restaurant, and dishes of food ready for patrons. Beautifully detailed with a burnished pattern in the court cap.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. A few prints have a couple small repairs. Slight soiling. Slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for individual condition. Nice condition overall.
