Series; Cutout Pictures of Famous Places in Edo
Ships Moored at Teppozu and Tsukuda Island, the Bush Clover Temple at Oshiage, and Dancers at the Oji Shrine Festival, 1857 - Terrific Hiroshige harimaze print featuring three scenes of famous places in Edo. Harimaze are woodblock prints featuring small designs designed to be cut apart and pasted into albums or applied to screens. At left, dancers march in the festival procession for Oji Shrine. Their faces are concealed by elaborate hats with square, fringed brims, topped with curving spikes. The circular inset shows a moonlit view of ships anchored at Teppozu and Tsukuda Island, while the fan-shaped cartouche below features a flowing stream and flowering bush clover. Attractive color and shading in these interesting subjects.
