Ishiyakushi

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Gyosho Tokaido), 1841 - 1844

Hiroshige's Gyosho Tokaido - After the incredible success of Hiroshige's original Hoeido or Great Tokaido in the 1830s, the artist designed several other series illustrating life along the Tokaido road. Named after the style in which the series title is written, the Gyosho Tokaido was published around 1841 - 1844. It features lively scenes focusing on the activities of travelers, winding through a rocky valley or climbing a steep mountain, pausing for a rest or stopping in a busy village or port. These charming designs are attractively colored and most feature fine bokashi shading. A nice complement to the more commonly seen Great Tokaido.

Ishiyakushi - Beautiful scene of travelers making their way through the snow towards Ishiyakushi. Snow falls heavily against the dark gray sky, blanketing the rider on horseback and the cargo on either side of his saddle. A groom leads the horse by the reins, wearing a straw mat as protection from the elements, while the fellow at left wears a straw raincoat. The rooftops of the village can be seen in the distance. A handsome design from this rarely seen Tokaido series.
