Original Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesan and Mirror

Comments - Lovely portrait of a courtesan admiring her reflection in a black lacquer mirror on a stand. She looks down with a shy smile, her lips colored with fashionable two-tone lipstick. Her elegant outer kimono features a design of folding fans topped with peonies and long flowing wigs, like those worn by lion dancers. A butterfly crest appears on the shoulder and sleeves, and her robe is trimmed with layers of butterfly print fabric. Her hair is pulled back into a sleek bun, adorned with tortoiseshell combs and hairpins. The cartouche at upper left is framed by a black container holding brushes and peacock feathers. A charming, classic Edo era beauty design, nicely drawn with fine line work and detailed with embossing in the white kimono collar.
