Distiguished Persons Viewing a Theater Performance, 1887

Comments - Terrific scene of the Onoe Kikugoro V performing as the Ground Spider (Tsuchigumo) during an exhibition for distinguished persons. He strikes a bold pose, stretching out the sleeves of his spider web patterned robe, his long shaggy hair flowing over his shoulders. Gray stage makeup adds to his frightening appearance. On a platform at right, a group of dignitaries sits in red plush chairs behind a cloth-covered table, including men in military uniforms and a woman in a Western style dress and a hat trimmed with feathers. An intriguing image with fine line work in the actor's hair, and vibrant color.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 18 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
