Shuten-doji, Benkei, and Taira no Sanemori

Series; Historic Sites at Fifty-three Tokaido Stations in Groups of Three, 1852

Shuten-doji, Benkei, and Taira no Sanemori - Handsome print featuring three kabuki portraits. At bottom, Bando Mitsugoro III appears as Taira no Sanemori. The nobleman stares ahead with an unhappy scowl, his chin protruding, as he clutches a cloth wrapped parcel to his chest. He wears an elegant brown brocade kamishimo over a blue kimono, his crest in yellow on the shoulders and sleeves. The upper left image shows Arashi Jitohachi III as Shuten-doji, the horrible horned demon who kidnapped young women and took them to his lair on Mt. Oe. The top right scene shows an actor as Benkei, the warrior monk, armed with a small arsenal, including a wooden mallet, a saw, and a naginata. A great design from this rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
