Robber Fighting off Policemen, 1857

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of Onoe Waichi II as the notorious robber Ishikawa Goemon fighting off two policeman trying to arrest him. Goemon stands atop the neck of a fallen guard, whose legs are sticking straight up in the air, while simultaneously grabbing the other attacker by his wrist. He grimaces worriedly over his shoulder at his young son, Goroichi, who cowers behind his kimono sleeve at left. The struggle takes place in a courtyard surrounded by a tall wooden fence, with a gate at upper left. The son is played by Sawamura Yoshijiro I. A lively scene with wonderfully expressive figures, detailed with embossing on Goemon's white loincloth.
