Sumo Ceremony

Comments - Intriguing triptych of a ceremony taking place during a sumo wrestling match before a group of Meiji dignitaries. Three men in formal dress stand in the center of the ring, the fellow at left holding a bow with two arrows tied to it. The man across from him holds an offering tray with vases containing rolled paper. The third man bows before a mound of sand topped with a gohei wand with bundles of folded paper used in Shinto purification rituals. The guests watch solemnly, many wearing black military uniforms. A fascinating illustration, beautifully detailed and vibrantly colored.

Artist - Toyonobu (1859 - 1886)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This triptych with three separate panels not attached at the seams. A few small holes at edges repaired, blend well. Overall good, see photos.
