Original Tsukioka Kogyo (1869 - 1927) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kurama Tengu

Series; Pictures of Noh Plays
Nogaku zue, 1897 - 1902

Kogyo and the Noh Theater - Kogyo was born in Tokyo in 1869 and spent his life in the capital. His mother married the famous ukiyo-e printmaker Yoshitoshi and it was under Yoshitoshi’s influence that he became interested in woodblock print making and the Noh theater. The Noh theater in Japan is a more cultured theater style than kabuki. Yoshitoshi was a fan of the Noh theater and through this connection, and chance, Kogyo began to design Noh theater prints. His design style was perfect for the Noh theater with its spare stage sets and lavish costumes. Kogyo's prints feature the participants in their beautiful costumes set against the natural color of the paper.

Kogyo's Pictures of Noh Plays - This fantastic Kogyo print is from one of his most important series, "Pictures of Noh Plays." This wonderful series includes more than one hundred designs, beautifully drawn with fine detail in the fabrics and facial expressions, faithfully bringing these memorable Noh performances to life. His incredible attention to detail beautifully captures the sumptuous costume fabrics, hand-carved masks, and intricately crafted props. Many of these striking prints include deluxe embellishments, such as shimmering mica, embossed textures, and soft shading. Their spare, almost Zen design, is quintessentially Japanese. These fantastic Kogyo prints are a great choice to collect or display, either singly or in groups.
