Raiko at the Demon Shuten-doji's Lair

Comments - Terrific scene from the legend of the Demon of Oeyama, the horrible Shuten-doji, who kidnapped young beauties and held them hostage in his lair on Mt. Oe near Kyoto. The great warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and his men traveled to the demon's hideout in order to kill him. Here Raiko and his retainers enjoy a sumptuous banquet with the demons, biding their time until the monster is drunk to attack him. A demon dances in the center, waving a fan, an overturned bowl on his head, as others pour out cups of sake for the guests. Shuten-doji relaxes on a raised platform at upper left, surrounded by beauties. Wonderful detail in the different demons and the palace setting. A fantastic triptych from this classic tale of bravery and heroism.
