Kumasaka Chohan Fighting Ushiwakamaru at an Inn, 1847 - 1850

Comments - Incredible kabuki scene from the play "Tsuki no ume megumi no Kagekiyo" of the fight between the robber Kumasaka Chohan and his gang of thieves and the young Ushiwakamaru. At left, Chohan presents a striking figure as he grips his naginata, his face mysteriously hidden beneath a yellow phoenix print robe and tall cap. Ushiwakamaru rushes forward at right, gripping his sword with both hands as he slashes at an enemy's weapon, knocking his opponent backwards as he trips over a fallen man. Other men sprawl on the ground as the fighting continues all around. A large woven trunk, a cloth bundle, and a pile of hats rests on the ground at right beneath the night sky. A fantastic scene full of energy and action, with wonderfully expressive figures.
