Series; Fifty-four Chapters of the False Genji, 1864
Fifty-four Chapters of the False Genji - A charming scene from Kunisada II's series based on the 1828 novel "A Fake Murasaki's Country Genji," a parody of the famous "Tale of Genji." The series illustrates the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji, and his encounters with the upper class. These beautiful images feature sumptuous kimono fabrics and elegant accessories, drawn with fine line work and rich color. Each print has a decorative fan inset with verse at the top and figures below. Nicely detailed with a faint overall embossed pattern of seashells and waves in the background, and embossed fold lines on the fan. The decorative border features Genji symbols. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many prints from this series in its collection. A great Edo era subject.
